Pothole In Perfect Pavement

Do you ever find yourself in the car thinking about how smooth the road is? Specifically about how crisp your tires reflect off of the pavement, then causing you to move forward toward your destination? But how at any moment a massive hole in the ground can set your car off balance and causes your car to pop a tire? Sure you can replace the tire but the car will never be the same. It will never be like how it was before.

I always knew that things were not always going to be smooth sailing between me and Mason, yet I didn't expect it to happen so quickly.

After all, we're only thirteen.

I thought we would be friends forever. I don't even know where we stand with

each other as of now. It all started when I came out the closet. Me and Mason wanted to do it together. We lined up our parents and began our speeches.

“Moms and Dads. We wanted to tell you something.” I began.

“Something that may change your viewpoints on us” he said following my lead. Our parents had horror in their eyes, terrifying that it still haunts me while I fall asleep. I can still see their massive eyes staring at me while I mustered out my next words.

“Mom, Dad… I'm a boy.” I abruptly stated. Tears spilled out of their eyes in a matter of seconds and along with their tears so did mine. My mom and dads fear then turned into love at that moment. I knew everything would be alright. Mason patted me on the back and then stepped forward towards his parents.

“Me too. Just not entirely.” his parents immediately bursted into tears. Not tears like my parents, but tears of hurt and pain.

Our parents took us ‘coming out’ very differently. Mason's parents are more republican as mine are more democratic, so I guess the reactions should've been more expected. Mason has started to blame me for how his parents took him being a boy. In my defense it's not my fault, I didnt think my parents would take it well either. Instead they just told me "I love you no matter what” and cuddled with me asking what I would like to change, that of course did not alter my body. I couldn't have predicted what would happen to Mason. It's unfair he blames me for it.

I worry now after all the progress me and him have made with one another that we're gonna lose each other when we need it the most. I've come up with a plan to get Mason back. Mason has been talking about the hairstyle he's wanted for years, so I'm gonna give it to him. I've been skimming through tutorials all day long and I think I'm qualified to do it. It's just a curly afro, how hard could it be? Grabbing my phone quickly, I text Mason.

Hey, I wanna make things up to you, skateboard to the playground?

It feels like I wait an eternity for a response, but in a matter of seconds one arrives.
